Challenges of integrating returned children from Syria

July 4, 2019

On July 3, 2019 BIRN published an article titled “The Challenge of integrating returned children from Syria into the education system”. The investigation aimed to reveal how the Ministry of Internal Affairs, Ministry of Science, Technology and Education, Municipalities, and other relevant institutions are dealing with the integration of returned children in the education system.

BIRN team has met and discreetly communicated with returned mothers, family members of returnees, a lawyer who protects one of the women returned, Blerat Shyqeriu, and officials from MEST.

According to Blerat Shyqeriu, “my client has 5 children but one of them is 15 years old and this is an age that lost a greater tempo (school wise), and still it has not been decided as to what grade level she should be admitted to”.

According to MEST, of the 74 children returned, 24 of them are at the pre-school grade level, whereas in order to integrate the rest they will apply the accelerated learning format, which is based on the Law on Pre University Education and administrative instruction No. 12/2014.
