Life of women from ISIS camps

July 28, 2019

BIRN, on July 27, 2019, published an article titled “Life of women from ISIS camps”.

The aim of this research was to describe the life of women that have returned from ISIS camps in Syria and Iraq, which remain under house arrest. For the purpose of this research, a Kosovo prosecutor, three returned women [from Gjilan, Prishtina, and Vitia], grandparents of two returned children whose parents have died in foreign fights from Kamenica, the director of the Center for Social Work, Ministry of Foreign Affairs, and a Professor of Education were interviewed.

Of the 74 returnees from mid-April, 32 are women. According to an interview with the prosecutor from the Special Prosecution, Syle Hoxha, they have not managed yet to specify which of these women were involved in terrorist acts. During the interview with the women, the key challenges and worries they face are 1) the impossibility of getting social assistance since they have to be physically present in municipal offices to obtain personal documents; 2) their children’s education and lack of extracurricular activities over the summer; and, 3) lack of funds for those returnees living with their parents. While, the Director of the Center for Social Work in Gjilan, Mursel Zymberi, claimed that women under house arrest do not have to be physically present for applying for documents because it is something that the Ministry of Internal Affairs will assist with. BIRN tried contacting the Ministry of Education but they have not responded.
