August 30, 2019

On August 30, 2019 BIRN published the article titled “Returned children from Syria meet Kosovar reality”.
This article tackles the issue of returned children and is in the scope of monitoring the activities with children who have returned from foreign fights before they started the school year, September 2nd, which have been monitored by the BIRN team.
This activity was organized by the Ministry of Interior Affairs, financed by the British Embassy. The aim of this article is to describe the importance of engaging returned children in educational and extracurricular activities for de-radicalization. 38 out 74 children that have returned begin school in September, these children are from Klina, Prishtina, Suhareka, Lipjan, Gjilan, and Ferizaj. 9 children are above the age of 4 and will register in elementary school in the formal and informal format. 2 children above the age of 16 will attend non-formal education. This article describes how the children proved during the activities that they had no information of the outside world as they do not know the looks and names of different animals, technology devices and toys. The children were taken to the playground at Milenium in Ferizaj, Vali Ranch in Gjilan, and in the national park of Germia in Prishtina. During an activity in Germia, children were asked to express their desires and needs through drawings. Our team has spoken with the children while they were drawing regarding their drawings. In their drawings, some of the returnees have drawn weapons, tanks, cars, and people they have met after they came back to Kosovo. The activities were developed with the presence of civil police for security purposes.
